Peter is 70, well-travelled, and not remotely done yet. These are his Notes — small observations from the road.
“What has he got in his pocketses?” demanded Smeagol – JRR Tolkien.
Pockets are a wonderful invention. They probably predate the wheel and are much more useful. After all, how many things can a set of spokes carry? Yes, of course, as part of a wheel almost anything from eggs to a Saturn V – but I have no need of such things. A pocket, now there is a thing of beauty and utility. Being a light-weight traveller with only a carry-on bag and work satchel, lots of pockets are essential.
Look for clothing with pockets that have the following features. Close securely with sturdy poppers, buttons or Velcro. As deep as possible. Thigh pockets for things you won’t often need. Hip pockets for a chained wallet. Back pockets for tissues or notepad. I have a favourite pair of trousers with a mid-thigh pocket that my cell phone fits exactly. It’s deep enough that the phone is hidden but readily accessible for the quick photo or a “where on earth am I now?” moment.
Belt loops wide enough for a strong belt.
Avoid cargo pants. They have pockets but not normally belt loops. And the trousers will get heavy. Ladies will find hiking, cargo pants or slacks, but none seem to have belt loops.
When flying I travel wearing a shirt with top pocket, a tough but presentable blazer with a total of five pockets and a pair of work pants with a total of six pockets.
No matter your fashion sense, and I am reliably informed that I have none, pockets are the way to go for a hassle-free travelling life.
