Peter's Notes | On the Subject of Bags

April 20, 2026

Peter is 70, well-travelled, and not remotely done yet. A decades-long plan, a Graham Greene novel, and a 16-year-old daughter who said "just go, Dad" brought him to DECADES — and to Vietnam. This is his story, written for anyone who's ever stood at a major milestone and wondered if now might finally be the time.

One can never have too much sticky toffee pudding I tell my daughter. It might be the same with bags.

I travel with these, all empty, ready for use in various situations.

  • An anti-theft cross body bag.
    • For travelling in possibly crowded environments such as the metro or local bus.
  • A lightweight belt bag
    • For wandering about. It's in a naturally defence place left front of my belt.
  • A belt pouch.
    • Quite small but large enough to carry a bottle of water.
  • A good quality wet bag for swimming stuff.
    • To carry things to and wet from……..
  • A small high quality waterproof bag for my phone and monocular scope.
    • Should good sense desert me and I go SCUBA diving or try a kayak once more.
  • A few food-type zip bags.
    • To hold open snacks.
